2017 Summer Photojournalism

Fall is solidly here in Northern Utah. Take a look back at some of my favorite photos from this summer.

Ted Sumner gets off his bike after flagging down an ice-cream truck on the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017. Raul Ruiz lives in nearby Wendover and spends the week driving his ice cream truck around the spectator areas on the salt flats.

Zack Schuster kayaks through Ogden Canyon during the Ogden GNARrows Down River Race on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017. Kayakers from around the region met for a day of racing on Class IV rapids near the mouth of the canyon.

Tyler Arnold, left, Jared Watson, center, and Cody Edwards search for boreal toads in the Monte Cristo Range on Thursday, July 12, 2017. Biologists from around the state are studying the rare high-elevation amphibians. Boreal toad populations have been shrinking around the West. The large toads are difficult to study, but Utah scientists are trying to get a better idea of how local populations are doing.

Moonlit Fire

I was out photographing the State Fire yesterday on the Utah/Idaho border. I was getting ready to leave as fire crews began a burnout operation. I moved down the road a bit and was able to get this shot of the moon as the fire reached the mouth of Portage Canyon.

I hung around and got this photo about an hour later as the moon set and crews worked their way further down the canyon.

You can see a gallery with more photos from the fire here (both day and night)

Forest Fire Animation

This might not fit on a photography blog, but I just finished my first crack at animation. I was writing an article and shooting photos about a project using controlled fire to improve aspen forests. I needed something to help make the scientific concepts a bit more easily digestible, especially since the last burn was 4 months before I moved to Utah, and this is what I came up with. Hope you enjoy.

Standard.net Video Player

Sadly, the video player at the paper doesn't work with some phones and portable devices. If you don't see it here, you can still view it on a computer.

Avon Two Wildfire

I was out photographing the Avon Two wildfire near Ogden last week. (Not to be confused with the first Avon fire which I watched start a few weeks ago by dumb luck.) You can find more photos, info, and a video here, but a few photo selects are below.
