The start of 2017

I've had a full start to photographing 2017. Now that we've hit April, I pulled together a few highlights from the first quarter of the year. Enjoy.

Liz Goldberg climbs the frozen falls at the end of Waterfall Canyon on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017. Every winter, the frozen water draining out of Malan's Basin turns the canyon above Weber State University into a popular destination among ice climbers in Utah.

A portrait of Jay, a Harris's hawk at the Ogden Nature Center. Like all birds at the nature center, Jay is unreleasable. He came to the center through a wildlife rehabilitation center after his wing tips were permanently damaged by frost bite.

Skip Lamb drinks coffee at The Gift House, one of the oldest business in downtown Ogden, on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. Lamb says he started coming to the shop at least four decades ago to buy shot and shells. Today he is part of a group of seniors who regularly stop by to drink coffee and share stories that may or may not be true. The Gift House started as a gift shop and lunch counter for soldiers passing through Ogden during World War II and changed to a pawn shop after the war.

A small peninsula off of Gunnison Island rises out of the north arm of the Great Salt Lake on Wednesday, Mar. 8, 2017. The isolated north arm of the lake is so salty that the water has reached concentration and salt builds up on every nearby surface. The only thing that can survive in the water is a bacteria which gives the water a reddish color.

Jose Ayala constructs a prop that his daughter will be using in their family's act later in the night during the Jordan World Circus at the Legacy Events Center in Farmington on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017. "I was born in the circus," said Ayala. "I'm loving it. I've got all my kids with me." Ayala performs alongside his four adult children who are the sixth generation of their circus family.

Ana CaƱenguez prepares a juice cup for her 18 month old grandson, Nehemiah CaƱenguez in their Tremonton home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017. Ana is an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador and is living under a deportation order. She first came to the U.S. to find work after one of her children died from malnutrition at home. Despite the campaign rhetoric, she says she doesn't fear a Trump administration. "We're willing to fight for our families with love," Ana said.

Forest Service wildlife biologist Masako Wright and archeologist Rachelle Handley look over the gate at the entrance to Logan Cave on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017. The gate was installed in 1995 to protect bats from human disturbance. Since that time, the population of hibernating of Townsend's big-eared bats has grown from less than 20 to around 400, making it the largest known colony in Utah.

Eric Shults waits in line for a room at Lantern House shelter on Thursday night, Feb. 9, 2017. Shults has been homeless on and off for around eight years. He recently ended up back at Lantern House after a temporary job on a road crew fell through.
